Striker Chris Wood has reportedly devised a method

Newcastle have reportedly made an approach for striker Chris Wood from Premier League relegation rivals Burnley.

The Magpies are expected to be busy this month on the back of their takeover, with Kieran Tripplier already joining the club so far during the January transfer window.

They are understood to be keen on signing a striker with Callum Wilson expected to be out of action for some time due to injury.

Wood, who is in his fifth season at Burnley, is said to be interested in making a move across the Pennines to join Eddie Howe's side.

One issue though is that Burnley might be reluctant to sell their player, especially to a team that also sit in the relegation zone.

Burnley and Newcastle sit 18th and 19th in the Premier League on 11 points - though Sean Dyche's side have played two fewer games.

Selling to Newcastle could give the Magpies an advantage in their bid to avoid relegation at Burnley's expense.

Wood is not the only striker that Newcastle are reportedly keeping tabs on.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah is an option, with Crystal Palace also monitoring the youngster who the Gunners still hope to sign to a new deal.

Liverpool's Divock Origi is another possibility, though the Reds would preferably like to get someone through the door before selling the Belgian.

Newcastle are also hoping to aquire a centre-back during the January transfer window, with Lille's Sven Botman and Sevilla's Diego Carlos among their targets.

England international Trippier joined the club from Atletico Madrid for a fee worth £12m.
