World Cup 2022 What two week Qatar trip could cost Wales fans at a minimum

A site visit by Wales Fan Embassy has revealed the cost a two week stay in Qatar for next year's World Cup.

It will cost at least £5,000 but the final bill could well be more - after weighing up the cost of flights, accommodation, match tickets and food.

Paul Corkrey of Wales Fan Embassy has been on a reconnaissance visit to Qatar as part of a human rights delegation and has visited several stadiums in the tiny Arab nation.

Corkrey said: "It's not going to be cheap for Wales fans if we qualify which I'm confident we have every chance. We're on a site visit now and a conservative estimate of £5,000 may just be enough to cover a two week stay here. A lot of money for the average fan."

"Flights will be anything from £600 to £1000 and hotels will be around £200 a night, there's no three star establishments here."

"Food and drink will probably cost around £70 a day and then with match tickets on top- £5,000 is a rough but probable expenses calculation."

Many have questioned the decision to host the tournament in Qatar, given the concern over the country's interpretations of human rights, worker conditions and the illegality of homosexuality there.

Due to Qatar's intense summer heat, this will be the first World Cup tournament not to be held in May, June or July and instead will be played from mid November until mid December.

Wales haven't yet qualified for next year's tournament, which would be their first since 1958, but have landed a favourable draw in the play offs- facing Austria at the Cardiff City Stadium before taking on either Scotland or Ukraine at the same venue a few days later.
